Getting Healthy (Part 2: Detox)

Based on the results of my blood work and the symptoms noted in my first article, I created a plan that would allow me to start the new season off with a little R&R and a program that would help clean out my system, naturally. So began my journey into detox…
4-Day Juice Fast
I had never done a detox program before, but the idea of giving my body a rest from the hard work of digestion made sense to me. Since I needed a little down time anyways, I thought my best bet would be to go away to a facility that specialized in these types of programs (i.e. I could relax while they handled the planning, shopping, and preparing of the juices that would sustain my body through the few days away).
I ended up at a chalet in Collingwood with 12 other people. What happened next surprised me.
I wasn’t hungry! My body was able to maintain the same level of energy that I normally had, on juices alone. I was shocked. Most days, as I am moving quickly from one thing to the next – I feel famished – and continually reach for meals and snacks to keep me going. Here at the retreat, with my only job being to relax and drink the juices they made for us, my body felt satisfied. My mind on the other hand, thought of food constantly. With each new activity - whether it was morning yoga, an evening stroll, or a late night game of euchre – my mind wanted the foods that it associated with them. In other words, my mind (not my body) was telling me that I wanted these items. Ultimately, the juice fast really showed me that most of my eating was driven by my emotions rather than my body’s needs.
Feeling light as a feather, I arrived home ready to choose foods based on how well they fuelled my body, not just on the comfort or convenience they offered me in the moment. I was also ready to continue on with the next phase of the plan. Colonics (aka: Cleaning out the Pipes), was considered the strangest and/or scariest treatment of my detox program. But as I soon found out, the benefits far outweighed the fright.
